Dr. Billie S. Ables was a marriage counselor and Psychology Professor at the University of Kentucky and in the U.K. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama and Ph.D. from Purdue University.
She began her career in Topeka, Kansas as a family psychologist and an assistant professor at Washburn University. Dr. Ables then began teaching Psychology at the University of Kentucky and served as a consultant for internship programs. Dr. Ables played a significant role in implementing Kentucky Medical Center’s internship program and developed a Human Growth and Development course for the school. She taught, trained, and supervised psychiatric residents and psychology interns. Dr. Ables won several awards for academic excellence and held workshops across the U.S. and Canada.
Dr. Ables then went to teach psychology in the U.K. for 24 years and was a Professor Emeritus. She had a private practice and continued training and supervising colleagues and psychology graduate students. In 2009, Dr. Ables was inducted into the K.Y. Psychological Association Hall of Fame. Her body of work, including numerous professional articles and three books, had a profound impact on her students’ and clients’ growth and change, and she leaves behind a true legacy.
