Dr. Marilyn “Mickey” Mailman Segal, an American developmental psychologist, author, and educator, advocated for young children throughout her career. She founded and was the Dean Emeritus of the Family Center at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It was later renamed the Marilyn Segal Early Childhood Studies Center. Dr. Segal earned her B.A. from Wellesley College, a B.S. in social work from McGill University, and her Ph.D. in social psychology from Nova University. Dr. Segal created the first Broward County Head Start program, educated children and parents, and mentored future professionals in the community. NSU Center commemorates her contributions by focusing on children’s well-being, education, and health to enhance their lives and families. The Center also offers preschool and pediatric services. NSU students can also participate in training opportunities, including pediatric dentistry, child psychology, and criminal justice programs. Her legacy is carried on through The Marilyn Segal Early Childhood Studies Center, which facilitates early childhood and special education programs, research, and activities. The Center carries out Dr. Segels’s vision and commitment to help as many children and positively impact their lives.
