Whether you are a parent or child care provider, The Infant and Toddler Handbook is full of developmental activities sequenced by age groups to use with children from 0-24 months. Help infants and toddlers with their early development of cognitive, social, motor, and language skills. The activities in this versatile book, called “invitations,” can be used in formal or informal environments. Use these tried-and-true activities with your infant or toddler at home, or implement them in child care settings. Each invitation details the emerging ability, the caregiver’s role, and activity.
Care combined with teaching begins with Chapter 1, “Infant/Toddler Development.” The handbook discusses social, motor, language, and cognitive development from birth to 24 months. “Chapter 2, The Infant/Toddler Environment,” describes how to set up the appropriate atmosphere. Chapter 2 helps identify delays, indoor and outdoor play activities, and performing basic care routines. Chapter 3, “Invitations to Look and Listen,” describes vision and hearing, the caregiver’s role, and has activities that use sight and sound. Chapter 4, “Invitations to Touch,” offers activities that introduce objects for the infant. Chapter 5, “Invitations to Communicate,” discusses the caregiver’s role and provides language activities. Chapter 6, “Invitations to Move,” presents motor activities and discusses safety in the environment where the infant or toddler will begin exploring. Chapter 7, “Invitations to Discover and Solve Problems,” introduces activities like hiding objects, building blocks, and nesting toys, which help develop thinking skills.
Author Kathryn Castle designed The Infant & Toddler Handbook to be an ongoing guide. Activities are broken down by months, including 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, 12-18, and 18-24. The appendices provide further reading and a system to match activities based on the individual child’s temperament. Playing an active role in the child’s early development will enhance their skills. The Infant & Toddler Handbook provides tremendous resources for caregivers. By being more knowledgeable, you can take early action if you witness cognitive delays. Through engagement and developmental activities, this handbook helps set infants and toddlers up for success.

Christopher T. Brendel –
Wonderful!
I came across this book at my University’s library while trying to find appropriate material for a project in my ECD class, and this book was phenomenal in answering any questions I came up with, as well as sparking ideas of my own. This is a must-read for all parents and caregivers. Great ideas!
